About this Church
West Sherman Baptist Church was established as a mission of East Sherman Baptist Church and was known as "Mission Church." First services were held in the chapel in November 1972. The formal organization of the new church as West Sherman Baptist Church was in January 1974 and became an independent Southern Baptist Church. There have been 4 pastors of WSBC since 1974, the last pastor being Danny Wood, serving from 1979 to 2025. In the past WSBC has experienced numerical and spiritual growth but over the last few years has experienced a season of gradual decline. WSBC has a total membership of 670 but are currently having approximately 100 in attendance. From 2020 to 2024, WSBC has had 6 baptisms. Unlike many churches, WSBC has continued to have Sunday Morning Sunday School/Worship, Sunday Evening Worship, and Wednesday night Bible Study/Prayer Meeting, with Mission Friends, GA's and RA's meeting on and Youth have between 30 and 40 from the neighboring apartments each Wednesday. There is a fresh expectation as we search for a new pastor. Today the average age is 65 of active church members but our church membership would welcome young people, young families into our fellowship. Our ethnic diversity of active church members is 98% Caucasian 2%African American.
Overall WSBC is a loving church desiring that we spread the gospel to the world around us. We are sitting in a community that is growing exponentially with new houses and apartments going up daily. The fields are truly white unto harvest. We are excited about what God will do through the leadership of a new pastor.
About the Role
West Sherman Baptist Church Pastor Profile
The Pastor Search Committee of West Sherman Baptist Church sought the input of our church family to help us understand the kind of man we will be searching for in our next senior pastor.
Conversations have been full of joyful expectation, and while there was a wide range of variety on answers in some degree, there was great unity overall. WSBC is searching for a pastor who is committed to the inerrancy and authority of the Bible. He will agree with the Baptist Faith & Message 2000 and will lead our church on strong foundations of biblical authority. We desire a man who is being transformed by God’s Word himself, as he leads our congregation to be transformed by God’s Word as well. He will be a text-driven expositor of the biblical text. He will be relational in his delivery, and firm in his conviction.
Our next pastor will be easily approachable, a man who is skilled in relationship building. He will lead our staff with a team-based approach, but will steward well the authority of the office of
pastor for all matters of final say. He will value the insight of long-time members of the church but will not cater to anyone (or groups) desire to the neglect of another’s. He will make biblical decisions concerning the direction of the church and communicate them with grace while leading gently over
time. He will visit prospective members, current members, and promote church ministries. WSBC still holds Sunday School, Sunday morning service, Sunday evening service and Wednesday evening service.
If he has a family, he will put God first, his family second, and the church third. We desire a pastor who models faithful leadership in the home and allows that to overflow into his leadership at the
church.
