Posting Ministry Positions

Where to Post a Ministry Position?

Finding the right candidate for a ministry position means getting the word out in the right places. For a Texas Baptist church, there are several key outlets to advertise your open ministry position.

Below we outline the state convention job boards, seminary job boards, local avenues, and general Christian job boards where you should post your opening. We also provide a resource for a sample job application template to help you collect information from candidates.

State Convention Job Boards

Churches looking to post positions in the state of Texas need to understand there is two Baptist Conventions in the state of Texas. Every SBC Church in Texas is affiliated with one of the Conventions or both of them (dually aligned).

SBTC or Southern Baptists of Texas Convention - Churches affiliated with the SBTC can post to the – “NextStep” Job Board:

Texas Baptist or BGCT (Baptist General Convention of Texas) - Churches affiliated with the BGCT can post on the Texes Baptists Ministry Board.

Churches that are Dually aligned may post in either or both of the convention job boards.

Local Association Job Board

Churches in partnership  with the Grayson Baptist Association may post locally on the GBA Ministry Job board as much as they would like. Information can simply be inserted into the inventory and positions will show up locally for interested candidates.

If a church does not have a structure to receive applications, the Association Ministry Job board can also collect applications that will then be sent to the church as they are completed.

SBC Seminary Job Boards

The six Southern Baptist seminaries each offer ways for churches to advertise positions to students and alumni. Posting your opening with these seminaries can connect you with candidates preparing for or already in ministry:

  • Gateway Seminary (formerly Golden Gate, in California) – Churches can post openings through Gateway’s Job Board, which connects ministries with current students and alumni across the western U.S.

Online Paid Ministry Job Boards

In addition to denominational listings, many churches expand their reach through national ministry job boards. Here are three of the most effective platforms:

  • ChurchStaffing.com – One of the oldest and largest job boards for church and ministry staff. A single job posting runs about $269 for one month, $419 for two months, $579 for three months, and $679 for six months, depending on length.

  • MinistryJobs.com – A job board focused purely on ministry and faith-based roles. Their pricing is given as “simple and straightforward: list for 30, 60 or 90 days with pricing starting around $199 to $349 per post.

  • JustChurchJobs.com – A newer church-hiring platform offering tiered pricing: From a Basic plan at $150 to a “Wide Reach” plan at $500, the tiers have different incentives to reach applicants:

Church Consulting & Staffing Agencies

Some churches choose to work with professional consulting agencies that specialize in ministry staffing, such as The Shepherd’s Staff or Vanderbloemen Search Group. These agencies maintain extensive networks of pastors, worship leaders, and ministry professionals and assist churches in finding candidates that align with their theology, culture, and leadership style.

While effective, these services come at a cost — typically a percentage of the hired candidate’s first-year salary (often ranging from 10% to 25%).

Making Your Position Description

Before posting your opening, take time to create a detailed position description. A well-written description not only helps applicants understand expectations but also helps your church clarify what success looks like in the role.

A strong ministry position description should include:

  • Job Title & Purpose – Clearly state the role (e.g., Associate Student Minister) and a brief statement summarizing the ministry’s mission and heart.

  • Responsibilities – Use bullet points to outline key tasks and rhythms of ministry (teaching, discipleship, events, pastoral care, administration, etc.).

  • Qualifications & Strengths – List spiritual, educational, and professional expectations such as faith commitment, leadership ability, and interpersonal skills.

  • Structure & Accountability – Note who the role reports to and how it fits within the ministry team.

  • Employment Status & Details – Include time requirements (full-time, part-time, bi-vocational) and general expectations for work hours or availability.

  • Salary Range – Provide a pay range or note that compensation will be “determined based on experience and qualifications.”

  • Start Date or Application Deadline – Give a clear timeline for when applications will be reviewed or when the position begins.
